The groove is routed by hand before a single strand is laid, so the incompletion at the centre is a real physical gap in the wood, not a bare patch on top of it.
Braided gold cotton rope follows the carved channel outward from the centre, anchored by brass nails and gold-coated wooden beads, with a single red bead marking the point the spiral was always circling. At seventy hours, this is the most demanding piece in the collection to build.

This Carved Edition of Restart Spiral is a unique, one-of-one original, distinct from the Linen Edition also in the collection. It took 70 hours to carve and build by hand, and it will not be remade in identical form.
Each work includes a signed certificate of authenticity, care instructions, and symbolic notes written by the artist explaining the compositional decisions within this piece.

What you are looking at
The groove is cut into the wood before the rope ever touches it. Where the Linen Edition wraps thirty-three nails across a flat surface, this spiral is a real channel carved into birch, following the same Archimedean path outward from a centre it never reaches.
The braided rope sits inside that groove, not on top of it, so every rotation is structural rather than applied. The red bead at the centre marks the point every restart has been circling, still unreached after seventy hours of hand labour.
Two versions of the same incompletion, built in two different materials. The carved version holds what the wrapped version could only suggest.
